New Requirements within Mareel
Face-coverings must be worn at all times by customers within the building unless eating or drinking or if you have a medical exemption.
Please wash your hands regularly and make use of the hand sanitisers provided. There are three foot operated hand sanitisers points in Mareel, other smaller hand sanitiser points are to be found around the building.
We have rearranged layouts within the building to enable social distancing, please allow a 2 metre distance between yourselves and other customers and follow any one way signs. The box office automatically socially distances cinema bookings unless they were made as a group, so please only book together if you are from the same household or bubble. Due to social distancing Cinema 2 and the Upper Café Bar are currently closed.
Track and Trace
We will be collecting details to conform with our legal requirements to provide customer details to NHS Scotland if a positive test is traced back to Mareel, more details can be found below. If you have booked with a box office account we will use the details on the account to contact you if necessary so please ensure that these are up to date.
We have increased our cleaning in line with government guidelines, please take your rubbish out of the cinema with you to help our cleaning teams. You may find some toilet cubicles locked, this is to enable a more efficient and regular cleaning system.
All our films are on sale online, over the phone and in person. We accept cash payments but please pay by card if you can. We will be printing tickets for customers who book in person, online bookings will have e-tickets.
Eating and Drinking
Face-coverings must be worn at all times, unless eating or drinking in the Café Bar or cinema. Our Café Bar is now table service only so please queue at the entrance and a member of staff will show you to your table and take your order. Tables are available indoors or out on the harbourside and can be booked online. Disposable tableware is being used at the moment for optimum hygiene.
Please be patient and respectful to our staff and customers – this is new to all of us.
Why are there less films on at the moment?
Mareel is open 11am-10pm Wednesday-Sunday at the moment, closed Monday and Tuesday, and due to social distancing we are unable to open Cinema 2 yet so we have less capacity to show as many films as we would have previously. As all cinemas were closed over the summer no new titles have been released but there are plenty of films that we were scheduled to show before lockdown so we’re now able to catch up with these.
Why are there only two weeks of films on sale at a time?
Due to the situation at the moment we are only programming films two weeks ahead in order to be more reactive to changes in guidance as they happen.
Why are there no regular slots, such as Screen Horizons or relaxed screenings, on at the moment?
Due to the limited screen availability we have temporarily removed our special screening slots, however they will be back as soon as possible. In the meantime we have chosen a varied film schedule and don’t forget, everyone is welcome in any screening.
Why are big films not showing on their release date?
We have taken the decision to not show big films like Tenet on release as, due to the distribution deal, it would be the only film we could show for two weeks and we want to cater to as many of our customers as possible.
Will there still be cheap day cinema tickets?
As Mareel will be closed on Monday and Tuesday we have moved our cheap day cinema prices to allow films to remain as accessible as possible:
£5.50 all day
£5.50 before 5pm
£7.50/£5.50 after 5pm
£7.50/£5.50 before 5pm
£10/£7.50/£5.50 after 5pm
Sat/Sun remain the same
£5.50 before noon, £10/£7.50/£5.50 the rest of the day.
We will be reviewing all of these decisions on a weekly basis as guidance changes. For more information on the cinema experience at the moment our Film Programme Manager has written a blog post here - https://www.shetlandarts.org/blog/the-movies-are-back-at-mareel
