Shetland Youth Theatre: In the Still of the Night have We Wept

The latest Shetland Youth Theatre production was devised by the young people of the Youth Theatre, a contemporary production inspired by the poetry, imagery, documents and artefacts of the First World War. This journey of discovery focused on timeless emotions and emphasise the human stories among the mass carnage of the most cataclysmic war the world had ever experienced. The young people worked with musicians and composers as well as various local organisations such as The Shetland Museum and Archives.

The experiences of the Shetlanders at home and at war is a central theme of the production and work was done with local schools, archivists and the wider community to discover and incorporate stories of the First World War through documents and accounts. The production toured around various Shetland venues, including areas particularly affected by losses in the Merchant Navy. There was also be performance at the Garrison Theatre, which was headquarters to the 7th Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders during the First World War and saw the local men mustering immediately before being shipped out, many never to return.

This show has finished for now – but get in touch if you are between 11 and 25 years old and would like to put your name down for next year's production! Email [email protected]
