Shetlanders are once again being invited to create short films for Shetland Arts’ annual celebration of local film-making talent, HomeMade.
The screening events will take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September at Mareel, but this year there’s a difference - as well as having the regular screening of films up to 4 minutes in length, there will be an additional screening of films from 4 to 12 minutes long, aimed at more experienced film makers.
So whether it be drama, comedy, animation, documentary or artist’s moving image, there’s an opportunity to get your short film screened in front of the most enthusiastic audience in the UK.
As ever, there will be support from Shetland ForWirds who will offer their annual award for the most effective use of Shaetlan, and for the 0 - 4 minute event the audience will get to choose their favourite on the day, for which an Audience Choice trophy will be awarded. Last year’s award winners included Christie Tulloch for his Lego Zombies adventure, the former Islesburgh Photographic Club for their interpretation of a poem by Robert Alan Jamieson, and a drama of faith and doubt by Josiah Naquin.
The hope for the 4 – 12 minute screening is for entries to be assessed by a panel of professionals involved in the industry who will provide feedback.
Curated by Shetland Arts volunteers Kathy Hubbard, Cara McDiarmid and Logan Nicolson, HomeMade was a perennial audience favourite at the former Screenplay Film Festival, bringing together local film makers of all ages and abilities.
“The new screening event has been added in response to feedback from previous film makers and audiences, both as a development opportunity for some who are ready to move into longer form work, but also as a celebration of the work of those who are making films here professionally or semi-professionally.” - Kathy Hubbard
Submissions now OPEN!
See below for entry information and submission form.
If you would like to submit a short film for this year’s Homemade event, please read the following:
First of all, you must be a Shetlander, by birth, residency or in higher education - in other words, you must come from Shetland, OR currently reside in Shetland, OR be a Shetland resident currently studying away.
There are two categories this year. The first is our regular 0 – 4 minutes (i.e., films less than 1 minute and up to 4 minutes 0 seconds long, including end credits); the second is 4 – 12 minutes, intended as a development opportunity for more experienced film makers and a showcase for those working professionally and semi-professionally as film makers in Shetland.
Timings - For the 0 – 4 minutes screening (Saturday 5th September) we make our regular plea to consider the 4 minutes as a limit and not a target! Very often, shorter is so much better. For the 4 – 12 minutes screening (Sunday 6th September) we anticipate that more experienced film makers will know when to stop …
In both cases there will be a selection and curation process so submission does not guarantee that your film will get screened in the final programme, but we try to include as many as we can. As we only have limited screening time, the curation process for the longer form films will be tighter.
Films should be suitable for general viewing - The event draws a mixed audience, including children, and we will not accept anything offensive or upsetting. We anticipate recommending the BBFC 12A classification for the HomeMade screenings. This means that audience members under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Here is a link to the BBFC website that explains the criteria when we consider the content of your film. www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/12
