The Knab Redevelopment Overview
The Knab Masterplan is a 15 year development plan for the old school site in Lerwick, re-purposing a civic asset to meet the future needs of Lerwick and the community of Shetland as a whole. It is a project strand of the Islands Growth Deal - a £335 million investment in the future economic prosperity of Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides. The masterplan will deliver upon the ambition of the growth deal to create the best housing development in one of the most remote and beautiful communities in the UK. It will incorporate affordable housing with community facilities, including a creative hub, amenity spaces and student accommodation. Shetland Islands Council’s vision recognises existing developments and promotes sustainable economic growth. The masterplan is supported by a framework for delivery which includes the public realm and landscape, incorporating elements of integrated public art and acknowledging the importance of local context and placemaking.
Photographer for Stage 1: DEMOLITION
Brief
Shetland Arts is partnering with Shetland Islands Council to commission a stills photographer for Stage 1 of the Knab Redevelopment, to document the demolition and clearing of the site, due to take place over a 26-week period between September 2022 and February 2023. This includes the demolition of the majority of the old (unlisted) school buildings.
We’re looking to capture all aspects of the activity around the demolition of the buildings at The Knab site; the architectural infrastructure, the process and the people - to chart this stage in the site’s evolving history. There is free artistic license within the contract and plenty of potential for timelapse photography/social media-friendly content but the main focus of this commission is to create a body of still photographs that will become an archive of the project.
This is a freelance position. The successful photographer will be required to work flexibly, to suit the demolition workplan and respond to its key stages as set out by the demolition contractor. They will work alongside the demolition contractor and the Knab project team, adhering to their health and safety requirements/procedures at all times. This may include working in bad weather and/or at weekends. The photographer will be responsible for gathering any necessary consents/permissions from people included in any images used.
Fee and key dates
This is a commissioned body of work with a clearly defined output and timeline.
The contract will be £2500 (to include editing time). This fee includes all expenses and equates to a fee of £200/day (12.5 days) which is indicative of the time commitment involved. The contract will cover the 26-week duration of the planned demolition work (planned for Oct. ’22 – Mar/Apr ’23).
The commission will be managed by Shetland Arts for Shetland Islands Council.
