LOCUS is a contemporary art trail being devised around the centre of Lerwick (Shetland) by Living Lerwick in partnership with Shetland Arts through grant funding from the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Fund.

LOCUS Stage 1 consists of four commissioned works of public art that will be located at predefined sites around the town, due for completion in April 2021 (subject to restrictions). These will act as town placemakers, animate the area and offer a new way to engage with contemporary art and the environment.

LOCUS Stage 2 will build on the success of Stage 1 to add two wall-based murals. These will be commissioned via an open call/selection process, responding to the same theme of placemaking: Where we are / Where we’re going / Where we’ve come from.

LOCUS2: Open Call // Brief

We are looking for artists with experience of mural painting/street art.

Proposals are welcomed from anywhere, however successful commissions will demonstrate a clear connection to Lerwick and its spirit/heritage/future/character and funds for travel/accommodation are limited. Proposals should give an outline of your practice, images of recent work and brief ideas for how you might approach this project.

From the Open Call we will interview and select up to four artists to each develop an initial design for one of the two mural locations. There will be a fee of £500 each for this design stage and a three-week timeframe to deliver these initial designs. The four designs will then be presented online as a competition, for the public to vote for their two favourite designs. These two winners will each be awarded the full commission (£2000) to finalise their design and complete the mural over the summer, for completion by mid-August 2021.

All work must be durable/sealed to withstand the extremes of our climate. An audioguide will hopefully be developed to accompany the LOCUS art trail map.
The lifespan of the trail is envisaged to be a minimum of 5 years.

Information about the mural sites will be provided at the selection stage in January 2021.

Timescales are provisional and may have to be amended to accommodate Covid-19 restrictions.

Fees and costs

There is an artist fee of £500 for each of the four selected artists to deliver an outline design. A further fee of £2000 will be awarded to each of the two winning artists for their design to be completed.
