LOCUS // Where we are / Where we’re going / Where we’ve come from

Placemaking through public art

Project overview

LOCUS is a contemporary art trail being devised around the centre of Lerwick (Shetland) by Living Lerwick in partnership with Shetland Arts. Four commissioned works of public art will be located at predefined sites to act as town placemakers, to animate the area and offer a new way to engage with contemporary art and the environment. The accompanying trail map will act as an interpretive guide, incorporating existing public artworks to create a wider trail. The self-led walking trail will encourage people to consider the town and its amenities with a fresh perspective. Our ambition is for a series of striking visual artworks that create a narrative on Lerwick and its connection to the past, present and future. The trail will connect business, place, art, the community and visitors to the town.

LOCUS is being delivered by Shetland Arts, in partnership with Living Lerwick.

The lifespan of the trail is envisaged to be a minimum of 5 years.

Completion and launch of LOCUS is planned for April 2021

TRAIL MAP: Brief

As part of LOCUS a trail map will be devised, designed and printed to accompany the work. The trail map will provide context and information about the works in the trail plus additional pre-existing artworks in the town, as well as being an artwork in itself. It will be a single folded paper sheet (also available as a download from our website)*.

We would like to commission an artist/designer/illustrator to create this trail map, using information, assets and images provided by Shetland Arts and the commissioned LOCUS artists. Additional imagery and the overall design will be the responsibility of the artist/designer/illustrator.

Fee: There is a fee of £900 for the delivery of the trail map design, inclusive of all the expenses incurred in producing the design (including but not limited to materials, mileage and delivery). This does not include print costs for the final product.

Timescales: The trail map will be completed and printed to coincide with the unveiling of the work in the town centre in April 2021.

Application: If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please send a short statement outlining your practice, with links to your work, to jane.matthews@shetlandarts.org by 5pm on Friday 8 January 2021 or by post/hand to Mareel.
