In 2006, Hoskins Architects won a national competition to design a cinema and music venue for Lerwick. The building was designed to reflect a tradition of simple, robust forms with an aluminium skin to echo the industrial buildings dotted along the waterfront. It subsequently won both RIAS (Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland) and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) awards for architectural excellence.
Local photographer Mark Sinclair was commissioned to record the various stages of the building's construction phase before it was finally completed and opened to the public in September 2012.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of Mareel, First Fix provides a glimpse back to the bare bones of this now-iconic building. The exhibition is on display in Mareel Upper Cafe Bar.
