Suzanne Briggs is an experienced community singing practitioner here in Shetland. She is currently completing her training with Singing Mamas, a national not-for-profit organization, and these free sessions will help her to achieve her Singing Mamas License in order to bring more regular sessions to the Shetland Community. She would love to meet you, sing with you and get your feedback.
Singing Mamas is focused on singing for the wellbeing benefit of the women themselves, with their children welcome and included. The sessions invite you to come and sing with no child-care to organise! You also don't have to be a mama of young children to join these sessions - all women are welcome to come along and sing in this supportive environment where singing is simply to feel good and connect with other women.
Suzanne has written a short blog post about her training experience so far:
"I am delighted to share that I have now started my Singing Mamas Training! I’ve had two online sessions and am now diving into my third module.
What has become immediately apparent to me is that this is like no other musical training I have ever had. Why? Because the focus is on how singing makes us feel and not on sound we make. In fact, this is not really musical training as such, but training in how to use our voices to hold a shared space where we can relax, be supported and re-energise through the power of singing together. The sessions are so warm and welcoming. This sits so well with my whole ethos and I’m genuinely excited to see what comes next and to share this wonderful, welcoming approach with as many women as possible.
I’m away south later this month for two days of face-to-face song sharing and training and I can’t wait. I’ll be sure to report back and share this with you ahead of our first free taster session on 29th October, where a warm welcome will await you. So looking forward to meeting you all!
Huge thanks to Shetland Arts for funding this project through the Shetland Arts' Creative Shetland Commissioning Fund."
The sessions are planned for the following dates:
- Wednesday 29 October, 10:30am - 12pm
- Tuesday 4 November, 10:30am - 12pm
- Wednesday 12 November, 10:30am - 12pm
- Tuesday 18 November, 10:30am - 12pm
