We have another blog post from Suzanne Briggs, telling us more about her training with Singing Mamas.

Suzanne is an experienced community singing practitioner here in Shetland. She is currently completing her training with Singing Mamas, a national not-for-profit organization, and these free sessions will help her to achieve her Singing Mamas License in order to bring more regular sessions to the Shetland Community.

"I’m fresh back from the most amazing couple of days of singing with Singing Mamas as part of my ongoing training. I’ve just completed two days of Song Leader Development down in Liverpool and I cannot tell you how full the happiness cup is right now!

Where to start? Both days were led by Kate Valentine (the founder of Singing Mamas) and her inspirational core team. The two days were spent sharing new songs with the group and working on how to nurture and support our perinatal mamas through song. Some of our group had their babes in arms with them and what a wonderful environment this created for all of us, babies included. Seeing these tiny little ones captivated, engaged and gurgling along as harmonies filled the air was quite magical.

Everybody’s voice is welcome in the circle: we were a complete mixture of experienced singers and women who were at the beginning of their singing journey. There is no sheet music and no accompaniment: just gently learning by ear and immersing ourselves in the moment. This is not a rehearsal and there is no performance. We are singing for now, for ourselves and for each other.

I am so looking forward to welcoming you amazing women to the first free taster session on 29th October as part of my training process to gain my Singing Mamas License, allowing me to bring more regular sessions to our community. See you very soon!"

Sessions are planned for the following dates:

  • Wednesday 29 October, 10:30am - 12pm
  • Tuesday 4 November, 10:30am - 12pm
  • Wednesday 12 November, 10:30am - 12pm
  • Tuesday 18 November, 10:30am - 12pm

Sessions are free, but booking is required to secure your space. Book here.
