The first event will be led by local artist Susan Pearson, who will give a 20-minute presentation in the Mareel Board Room, followed by soup in the cafe while participants will have the chance to peruse her exhibition and take part in some facilitated questions inspired from her presentation. Susan will discuss making and materials using examples from the Becoming Island exhibition currently in Mareel. She will highlight the hybrid creatures that emerge from the entanglements of body, land and materials, inspired by transformation, memory, and folklore.
Susan says, "I will describe previous and future projects, including my final project for the Art and Archaeology master's, entitled Embodied (is)land: Narratives for Becoming-with."
Artist Meet-Ups are open to anyone who sees themselves as a Creative Practitioner and we welcome people of all experiences. They are an informal space to learn about an artists' work while sharing some of your own thoughts around your practice.
Each session will be facilitated by Shetland Arts' Creative Project Manager, Kathryn Gordon, who adds, “the Artist Meet-Ups give us chance to learn about another artist's process, which I'm really excited about as I love to hear how they make their work and what goes on behind-the-scenes. They're open to anyone creative and the conversation will have a couple of focus points, inspired by the artist's talk beforehand. I'm really looking forward to catching up with folk over a bowl of soup and hearing about what has inspired Susan's exhibition and all of her work!”
Tickets for Artist Meet-Ups cost £2.20 (including 10% booking fee) and are available to purchase online here, in-person at the Box Office in Mareel, or by calling on 01595 745 500 during opening hours of 10am-9pm, Tuesday - Sunday.
