Shetland Arts have announced the first three performances to be a part of their new Soup and a Show series.
These shows will run monthly in Mareel at lunchtimes, where customers can enjoy a tasty bowl of soup while experiencing live performances from local performers.
The idea behind the "Soup and a Show’" style is that it features a short, 40-minute performance that can take place during your lunch hour. An open call was put out in in early July asking for local performers to submit their readymade works to be considered for the lineup, with any art form considered (music, comedy, visual art, craft, dance, drama, new media, film).
Starting from October, three shows have now been confirmed, to be performed by Liz Tulloch, Chloe Tallack & Jono Sandilands and Jenny Watt & Dierdre Hayward. Every show is different, from spoken word to live projection mixes and music, so there’s something for everyone on offer!
Shetland Arts’ Creative Project Manager, Kathryn Gordon, adds, “We're really looking forward to showcasing these three excellent local performances. The fact you can come in on your lunch hour and enjoy some excellent art over a bowl of soup, will be a fun, and a slightly different way, to spend your lunch break.
Liz Tulloch: Honouring the Elders
Liz Tulloch hosts a storytelling session which is a celebration of her father, Shetland storyteller Lawrence Tulloch. Liz feels that it was important also to honour her grandfather and those who came before him.
The show starts with a bit of explanation about where her family comes from and the house that her father and grandfather grew up in. It was a house that was always bursting full of people and therefore stories. The show carries on with a selection of stories associated with her father and grandfather and interlaces explanations of why she's chosen the stories as well as including the memories of hearing them for the first time.
An immersive collaboration between visual artists Chloe Tallack and Jono Sandilands.
Day Tripping mixes live projections, film, and a powerful electronic soundtrack *mixed by Drosso* to create a sensory journey. Shetland's landscapes appear and reappear, layered with glitchy, techno-inspired textures that shift and transform in real time. And instead of waiting until after dark, this performance happens in daylight, turning an ordinary afternoon into something vivid, playful, and immersive.
Jenny Watt & Dierdre Hayward: 100 Years of Musicals
A show exploring songs from 100 years of musicals on stage and screen. It will be an exploration of how musicals changed over the course of a century.
Before each piece there will be a quick intro to why this musical was important to the development of musical theatre and what themes the song itself explores. Songs will be sung by Jenny Watt with Dierdre Hayward accompanying on Piano. Some songs include: "Memory" from Cats, and "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables.
