Shetland Arts is pleased to announce the launch of its Commissioning Fund 2025/26, opening fresh opportunities for creative practitioners across Shetland to develop new work, engage communities, and strengthen their artistic practices.

Shetland Arts is aware that there are a multitude of things that freelance artists need to continue working in the arts, such as (but not limited to) time, space and money. The intent behind this round of commissions is to help address some of these needs, to support artists with financial input that will go towards all, or at least some, of the project delivery.

The new commissioning plan comprises six distinct funding strands, split into two groups across the year, designed to support artists at various stages and across diverse forms of practice. The first group of commissions is now open for applications, and the second will open in early 2026.

Kathryn Gordon, Creative Project Manager, says, “I am really excited to have made a new commissioning plan that will run for the next few years. Each strand will run once a year, which should give clarity to artists of what funds will be available, and for what type of projects. I hope this will encourage artists to think of plans that may fit into each category, and as they run yearly, will give people time to think about what sort of project they might be interested in doing. The breadth of commissioning strands available means there will be something for a broad range of artists. They support all art forms, and there’s a specific strand to encourage people new to working in the arts to apply. I am passionate about creating opportunities that allow artists to make and deliver work here in Shetland, and I believe these Commissions will allow this to happen.

Groups and the funding available are:

  • Group 1 (closing date December 2025):
    • Soar (Emerging) - up to £3,000
    • Participate (Engagement Projects) - up to £10,000
    • Generator (New Works) - up to £10,000
  • Group 2 (closing date May 2026):
    • Catalyst (Training and Development) - up to £3,000
    • Boost (retail) - up to £1,000
    • Playwrights’ Bursary – up to £750, in partnership with Playwrights’ Studio Scotland

The launch of this commissioning plan follows the success of the Creative Shetland Commissioning Fund, launched late last year. Shetland Arts was delighted to be able to support ten artists (find out more here) to carry out their projects, across a range of art forms. Applicants, both successful and unsuccessful, were invited to feedback on the application process which has helped to shape this new commissioning plan.
