Shetland Arts are excited to announce that Screenplay and Wordplay, the UK’s most northerly film and literature festivals, will return in Autumn 2021. Running to a condensed format, Screenplay will run from Wednesday 1 to Sunday 5 September, whilst Wordplay returns from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 September.

Screenplay, Shetland’s annual film festival, will see Kathy Hubbard come out of retirement to once again take the helm alongside film critic Mark Kermode and Professor Linda Ruth Williams to curate this years’ festival. Showcasing films from Shetland and across the world, the festival will feature all the well-known and loved Screenplay strands, such as Look North, Family Favourites and HomeMade, of course there will also be at least one film with a dog in it!

The challenge we have is to deliver the ‘essential’ elements of Screenplay within whatever constraints Covid-19 places on us - and I’m really looking forward to helping to make that happen. Kathy Hubbard, Screenplay Curator

Wordplay, Shetland’s festival of literature, celebrates its 20th birthday this year. Curated by author Malachy Tallack, it features an exciting list of guest authors of local, national and international renown for readings, workshops and school sessions, as well an opportunity for local authors to showcase their work in a celebration of Shetland writing.

I'm hugely excited to be working with Malachy on the return of Wordplay, curating a festival which we hope will bring folk together in whatever way possible for a whole range of exciting events” Floortje Matthew, Shetland Arts Programme Manager

The festivals will run in accordance with COVID guidelines in place during September.
