Cinema screens at Mareel will be closed between Sunday 26th and Thursday 30th January 2020 to allow technicians to replace and update the projectors.

One of 12 projects funded through Screen Scotland’s Cinema Equipment Fund in 2019, this is the first phase in transforming the local cinema going experience. Technicians will upgrade first generation Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) compliant equipment to enable better cinema experiences at Mareel. The second phase of the project will allow the purchase of portable film screening equipment, which will allow high-quality film screenings to be brought to community halls, schools and care homes across the isles.

Jonathan Ritch, Head of Production at Shetland Arts said: “This award from Screen Scotland has enabled us to improve our projection equipment at Mareel. Replacing our lamp projectors, we will be installing new laser projectors into Screen 1 and Screen 2, which are friendlier to the environment. We’ll also be upgrading our audio processers across the screens.

Graeme Howell, Chief Executive at Shetland Arts added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time, however we hope that customers can rejoin us from Fri 31st January for a host of new releases.

Screen 1 and Screen 2 at Mareel will be closed between Sunday 26th January and Thursday 30th January, with both screens reopening on Friday 31st January. Our film programme can be found at www.shetlandarts.org.
