Our Story: The Shetland Arts Journey
Shetland Arts has been part of Shetland’s creative life for decades, supporting and developing the arts across the islands. Take a look at how we got here!
2006 - Shetland Arts Is Established
Shetland Arts was formally established in 2006, bringing together the work and legacy of two key cultural organisations: the Shetland Arts Trust and the Islesburgh Trust. This brought together over two decades of innovation in arts development across the isles.
As part of this merger, Shetland Arts took over ownership and running of Bonhoga Gallery and took on management of the Garrison Theatre, which is owned by Shetland Charitable Trust - ensuring both venues remained central to Shetland’s creative future.
2008 -The Booth in Scalloway
We acquired The Booth, a purpose-built live/work space for visiting artists in the heart of Scalloway. Currently managed by Wasps Artist Studios, Glasgow, artists can apply to stay at The Booth for a month at a time and applications are welcomed from artists working across all disciplines.
2012 - Mareel Opens
The UK's most northerly music, cinema and creative industries centre, Mareel offers a stunning setting for performance, production, studying or just relaxing with a coffee.
Mareel is home to a huge range of events, from concerts, gigs, festivals, to private film screenings, fully equipped education & rehearsal spaces, as well as weddings, conferences and parties.
2023 - Bonhoga Refurbishment
Bonhoga is undergoing a major refurbishment to improve access, refresh the gallery space and upgrade the café and shop. These improvements will ensure Bonhoga can continue to support Shetland’s vibrant creative community well into the future for the next 20 years.
Today
Shetland Arts continues to grow and evolve, supporting creativity in all its forms. From running vibrant venues, fantastic events to delivering creative support, education and outreach - we work to ensure the arts remain a vital and valued part of life across the isles.
