The Dance Bus hits the road this weekend (Saturday 14 July), taking a day of celebrating dance around Shetland.

On board the bus will be drummers from Aestaewast and a large group of enthusiastic ‘movers and shakers’  – volunteers from the community who have rehearsed a 5 minute piece to perform at each stop. The band will then carry on playing for a further 20 minutes, giving everyone who comes along the chance to dance together and socialise.

The bus will begin its journey in Yell with a performance and interactive dance session at the Yell Leisure Centre between 10:40 and 11:10. It will then journey to Brae Leisure Centre for a stop between 12:30 and 13:00. The next stop will be Aith, and the West Mainland Leisure Centre, between 13:50 and 14:20. The bus will then make its way to the south of Shetland’s Mainland, with a stop at the Sandwick Social Club between 15:30 and 16:00, before finishing up in Lerwick at the Museum and Archives from 16:50 to 17:20.

The dancers’ routine has been put together by choreographers John Morris and Jane McLaren over three rehearsal sessions, and they would also like to see members of the community join in with the interactive dance session at each stop. Emphasis will be on celebratory, fun dance and participation is welcomed from all – those with little or no experience, all ages, all shapes and all sizes.

The Dance Bus events are possible thanks to funding from Creative Scotland’s Big Dance Fund.

The dance is finished, and our dancers and musicians have been working hard. We have one more rehearsal tonight to prepare before the Dance Bus rolls on Saturday. Please join us at one of the five venues around Shetland – the more the merrier!
