Screenplay starts at The Garrison

The first Garrison screenings for Screenplay get underway today with ‘Young at Heart’ at 2.00pm. A film about an inspirational group of senior citizens, you may find you need your hankie at the end! This evening’s classic film is ‘An American in Paris’ with the sublime Gene Kelly, followed by a series of films about gender and sexuality collectively entitled ‘Stick ‘Em on an Island’. Hope to see everyone there.

The Fetlar audience provided a great start for Screenplay on Saturday night (and looked after our projectionist in a positively royal manner!). Sunday saw us at North Haven Care centre showing ‘Simmer Dim’, a smashing piece of archive film about Shetland made by the Methodist Home Mission in the early 1950′s. Residents, visitors staff and volunteers cosied up to enjoy this session. We’ll definitely be back in the winter ….. perhaps a bit of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall next?

Screenplay in Fetlar and North Roe

Screenplay 2010 starts tonight at Fetlar Community Hall with a screening of ‘Chicago’. Shetland Arts and Shetland Film Club have teamed up to offer screenings around the islands before the festival settles in to The Garrison Theatre next weekend. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Making a Song and Dance’ so ‘Chicago’, with its non-stop high-kicking song and dance routines is a perfect starter. There’ll be another screening at the North Roe and Lochend Hall tomorrow night, after a stop-off at North Haven to show some archive film to residents.

Calling friendly dogs and their owners……

We know this is a bizarre request but……..we are looking for half a dozen friendly canines and their owners to join us for a screening of Ken Wardrop’s 5 minute film, ‘Useless Dog’ at the Shetland Livestock Marts at Staney Hill at 11.00am on Thursday 2nd September. We hope this will be picked up by the national news. At the very least it will find its way on to YouTube and your dog will be famous in cyberspace. There will be Bonios for every canine member of the audience, and a little treat for their owners too.l

Screenplay 2010 – Film Festival gets underway

Screenplay 2010, Shetland Arts’ 4^th Film Festival gets underway on Sat. 28^th August, starting at Fetlar Community Hall with a screening of Chicago, and again at North Roe Community Hall on Sunday 29th. Outreach screenings of Sounds Like Teen Spirit will take place in various schools early next week, and there will be screenings in care centres of some Shetland Archive footage.

Screenplay/Wordplay printed programmes now available

In response to all the phone calls and requests, we are happy to say that the printed programmes for Wordplay/Screenplay are now available from Shetland Arts’ Toll Clock Office, Islesburgh Community Centre, Peerie Shop Cafe, The Olive Tree, the Library, Shetland Times Bookshop and various other places. Please note that it is a combined programme, with information on both festivals in the one booklet.

There are a number of free events and films, but we would advise booking for these in advance; bookings for free and paid events can be made at the Shetland Box Office 01595 745555 or by visiting the Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh Community Centre Reception.

Wordplay/Screenplay programme nears completion

After what seems like weeks of proof reading, the programmes for Wordplay and Screenplay have now gone to the printers and should be ready next week. You can have a look at one online on the Screenplay page and the Wordplay page. There are Early Bird booking deals on tickets if you book before 27th August; Screenplay tickets are available from the Shetland Box Office now (01595 745555), and Wordplay tickets will be available to buy next week.

Wordplay/Screenplay 2010

Wordplay 2010, Shetland’s 9^th annual Book Festival will be held on Saturday 4^th and Sunday 5^th of September at Islesburgh Community Centre. The festival will contain a wide variety of events for people of all ages. Guests will include best selling writer and award winning broadcaster, Simon King, Costa Prize winning poet Christopher Reid and novelist James Robertson as well as David Harrower, one of Scotland’s leading playwrights.

Also appearing will be film critic, Mark Kermode, who with Linda Ruth Williams will curate Screenplay, the film festival which will be based in the Garrison Theatre and will run from Tuesday, August 31^st through to Sunday 5^th September and will feature actor Jason Isaacs and a wide variety of films, including work by local film makers. Further information about both festivals will be published in due course.
