On Tuesday 7th December the Shetland Film Club will be showing Of Time and the City at the NAFC Marine Centre at 7:30pm. Mark Kermode’s favourite film of 2008, which he describes as “at once heartbreaking and hilarious, with Davies’ gorgeously ripe narration rolling like heady wine around a half-filled glass, this life affirming memoir….grows more wonderful with each viewing.” The film invites the audience to meditate along with the director on what has become of Liverpool, his home town, since the end of World War Two. Davies blends archive footage, music, poetry, philosophy and his own thoughts and memories into a 72 minute eulogy to the city and its inhabitants that is intensely moving and thought-provoking. Of Time and the City has received massive critical acclaim. It is a treat for any cinema-lover, but for anyone who has roots or history in the North of England it is simply unmissable. The film carries a ‘12A’ certificate. Tickets cost £4.50 (£3.50 concessions) and are available at the door.

On Tuesday 9th November the Shetland Film Club, supported by Shetland Arts, will be showing Sketches of Frank Gehry at the NAFC Marine Centre at 7:30 pm. Architect Frank Gehry and filmmaker Sydney Pollack are two of the best-known names in their respective fields. In this documentary, director Pollack turns his camera on to his long-time friend Gehry, one of the world’s most celebrated architects and creator of some of the greatest buildings of the modern era, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Pollack uncovers Gehry’s creative process, from his early abstract sketches and three dimensional models to the awe-inspiring finished structures. Shot in an informal, highly accessible style, the film is a fascinating portrait of the man whose masterpieces have transformed a conventional science into an extraordinary art form. The film carries a ‘12A’ certificate.

This screening is part of the ‘Power of Place’, Shetland’s year long celebration of architecture and place, and tickets are available on the door at £4.50 (£3.50 concessions).

Bricks in Flicks is a series of four monthly film screenings that show the different ways in which architecture has featured in films. The films are part of the Power of Place (Shetland’s Year of Architecture and Place 2010) project and are being shown in partnership with the Shetland Film Club. The four films range from documentary to fiction.

The films start on Tuesday 14th of September, with My Architect Louis Khan, a tale of love and art, betrayal and forgiveness, in which the illegitimate son of a legendary architect, Louis I. Kahn, undertakes a five year worldwide exploration to understand his long-dead father. Louis Kahn is one of most important American architects of the second half of the twentieth century. The film represents Nathaniel Kahn’s quest to understand and appreciate the work of his late father.

The next film is The Draughtsman’s Contract by Peter Greenaway. Mr. Neville, a cocksure young artist is contracted by Mrs. Herbert, the wife of a wealthy landowner, to produce a set of twelve drawings of her husband’s estate, a contract which extends much further than either the purse or the sketchpad. The sketches themselves prove of an even greater significance than supposed upon the discovery of the body of Mr. Herbert.

The third film is Sketches of Frank Gehry, a 2005 documentary film directed by Sydney Pollack about the life and work of the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. The film features footage of various Gehry-designed buildings, including a hockey arena for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The film includes interviews with other noted figures.

And finally in Of Time and the City Terence Davies takes us to his childhood and youth in Liverpool. He’s born Catholic and poor; later he rejects religion. He discovers homo-eroticism, and it’s tinged with Catholic guilt. Enjoying pop music gives way to a teenage love of Mahler and Wagner. Postwar prosperity brings some positive change, but its concrete architecture is dispiriting. Davies’ narration is a mix of archival footage, his own reflections and the poems and prose of others.

My Architect Louis Khan is on Tuesday 14th September, The Draughtsman’s Contract is on Tuesday 12th October, Sketches of Frank Gehry is on Tuesday 9th November and Of Time and the City is on Tuesday 7th December. All films are at Scalloway Marine College and start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £4.50 or £3.50 concession and are available on the door.

Anyone with an interest in the built environment should get along to the Scalloway Marine College on Tuesday evening (tomorrow) to see ‘My Architect’, being screened by Shetland Film Club as the opening film of the Bricks in Flicks film season, as part of Power of Place, Shetland’s Celebration of Architecture and Place.

Louis Kahn was one of the greatest architects of the 20th century: a mystic, an artist, a man of the world. Everyone knew Louis Kahn – except his son.

‘My Architect’ is a tale of love and art, betrayal and forgiveness in which the illegitimate son of a legendary artist undertakes a five year worldwide exploration to understand his long dead father. Louis I. Kahn, who died in 1974, is considered by many architectural historians to have been the most important American architect of the second half of the 20th century. A Jewish immigrant who overcame poverty and the effects of a devastating childhood accident, Kahn created a handful of intensely powerful and spiritual buildings – geometric compositions of brick, concrete and light. This film represents Nathaniel Kahn’s quest to understand and appreciate the work of his late father, to explore the thinking behind his stark yet spiritual designs, and to reclaim a filial connection with the complex, contradictory man.

Tickets cost £4.50 and £3.50 and are available at the door.

As part of Power of Place Shetland Architectural Society are holding an open-doors event, called Doors Open, where they will be opening their homes and homes of clients to members of the public. When would be better than in Shetland’s Year of Architecture 2010 for the local profession to give the public an opportunity to view and experience well considered, innovative and at times very personal design? The homes include town and rural locations, new build, refurbishments and extensions.

The event has been organised to coincide with Shetland’s Hamefarin (14 – 26 June 2010) and the individual homes will be open on certain dates during Hamefarin fortnight. The event is separate to the already well established national Doors Open Day which takes place annually in September. Doors Open includes two architectural projects which have been shortlisted in the northern isles section of the Inverness Architectural Association (IAA) Design Awards 2010.

The Doors Open homes are: Bernard & June Redman’s house at Ham Station, Ham, Bressay, designed by Bernard, a new house at Vedrik in Bigton designed by architect Ian Irvine, Iain & Suzanne Malcolmson of Redman and Sutherland Architects own house, Grunnabreck, at South Nesting, a new home at 9 Quoys Road, Upper Sound, Lerwick designed by PJP Architects, Foraness at Inner Sand, Sand, Bixter by Redman and Sutherland Architects, Ian Irvine, of PJP Architects, extension to his family home Sjoglimt in Burra, Skeogarth, one of two houses designed by Mike Finnie on a south west facing coastal site in East Burra and Ballaskerry, Upper Quoys, Upper Sound, Lerwick by Redman and Sutherland Architects.

The projects short-listed for the Inverness Architectural Association (IAA) Design Awards 2010 are Ballaskerry, Upper Sound, Lerwick and Iain & Suzanne Malcolmson’s house at Grunnabreck, South Nesting.

A full description of all the houses that are open to visitors can be found on www.powerofplace.co.uk <http://www.powerofplace.co.uk/> . All the houses have individual opening times during the Hamefarin fortnight. The exact dates, opening times and directions can be found on the Power of Place website. If you don’t have access to the internet you can find out details by phoning Shetland Arts on 01595 743843. A leaflet is also available from Shetland Arts at the Toll Clock Centre in Lerwick.

‘Power of Place – Shetland’s Year of Architecture and Place 2010’. It is the first project of its kind in Shetland. The project hopes to bring greater community involvement with architecture and more participation in decision making about public buildings and spaces in Shetland. It is a partnership between Shetland Arts, Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Architectural Society, the Scottish Government’s programme of architecture and outreach activities (through Architecture + Design Scotland) and Shetland community organisations.

During 2010 Power of Place is running arts, educational and community workshops for all ages, themed articles in Shetland Life, an international conference (Building Resilience in Island Communities 17/18th September), open forums for debate and discussion, youth street events and ‘Bricks in Flicks’ – an architecture film festival. In partnership with WordPlay, Shetland’s annual book festival, we are launching a creative collaboration open to everyone in Shetland entitled ‘2100: Future Shetland’.

We are asking people to imagine what Shetland will be like in the year 2100, ninety years from now. What will Shetland look like? Who will be living here? What will the buildings and architecture look like? Will Shetland be a sustainable community? Will climate change affect the islands? Will new technologies affect the islands? How will Shetland adapt to changes?

We are looking for poetry, prose, images, music, film, new media, animation – any way that people want to show their vision of Shetland’s future.

The ‘vision’ will be displayed online and selected work will be read out at the Wordplay Festival in September. Ideas may also be used to stimulate discussion about Shetland’s future at the Power of Place Open Forums.

Media Release:

The 4th biennial survey of architecture in Scotland is the starting point for the next exhibition at the Bonhoga Gallery, Weisdale Mill. It is entitled Building Biographies and is on tour from The Lighthouse, Scotland’s National Architecture and Design Centre, in Glasgow. It is a self contained exhibition featuring recent projects from Scotland and Norway that examine issues of culture of place and regional identity in this time of globalisation. It looks at four recently completed buildings, three from Scotland and one from Norway, to explore the new trends in regional and sustainable building. The exhibition was co-curated by Oliver Lowenstein and Morag Bain and features specially commissioned models, photographs and films.

Nick Barley, the Director of The Lighthouse writing about the exhibition and the publication that accompanies it expresses: “The point of departure was to ask to what extent today’s new buildings are a reflection of the region in which they are produced. In effect, we wanted to find out whether there is such a thing we can describe as a ‘new Scottish architecture’, or a ‘new European architecture’, or even a ‘new regionalism’ and if so, what exactly these phrases might mean, “But as the project has progressed, its scope has become more refined. By asking ‘what are the factors which make a building the way it is?’, we have ended up searching for answers to the question of what architecture might stand for in a post-industrial, post-fossil-fuel, post-Modern age.”

The themes that lay at the heart of Building Biographies – those of region, the pervading spirit of place and of all our senses, of materiality and tactility, and a particular approach to sustainability – criss-cross the Scottish buildings featured in the survey and together they offer an evocative illustration of a diversity of styles emerging in these areas.

Architecturally, the clearest contrast between Scotland and Norway is that Norway has one of the longest and unbroken traditions in timber building and construction, while Scotland is known for a building tradition which until recently, has shown limited interest in timber, despite the many forested parts of the country. The two Norwegian buildings featured in Building Biographies show how a new generation of young architects is using contemporary architectural vocabularies to continue, in the most general way, two of Norway’s most noticeable cultural influences; the abiding power and love of the natural world and the commitment to work with, and expand, the possibilities of wood.

There will be no preview for this exhibition, however, the gallery will play host to the launch of the Power of Place Festival – Shetland’s Year of Architecture and Place. The evening event is planned for 8th May from 6-8pm and everyone is welcome.

Building Biographies opens to the public on Saturday 25 April and will run until Sunday 24 May. The Gallery and Café are open Tue – Sat 10.30am-4.30pm and Sun 12.00pm-4.30pm.
