The newly formed Shetland Community Orchestra will be having its inaugural AGM at 2.30pm on Sunday 6th February at Islesburgh Community Centre.

The orchestra aims to offer local musicians performance opportunities and the chance to develop their playing together with providing local audiences with a diverse and high quality program of classical music.

It will be open to players of orchestral instruments of all ages with a minimum standard equivalent to Associated Board Grade 4. All interested parties, both playing and non-playing, are cordially invited to this meeting. The agenda includes the election of the first committee and formalising the group constitution. Draft copies of the constitution are available from Shetland Arts.

The orchestra has so far been led by a steering group of well know local teachers and players including Nigel Hayward, Annalie Irvine, Carolyn Johnston, Neil Morris and Donald Macdonald with support from Shetland Arts.

Mr MacDonald said: “Music at its best brings people together. It is hoped that the orchestra will provide a supportive environment for players to hone their instrumental skills whilst enjoying the experience of rehearsing and performing great music.”

To ensure that this activity will not be confined to Lerwick it is envisaged that the selection of rehearsal and performance venues will be spread throughout Shetland.

It’s heartening to see such experienced and motivated individuals coming together for the benefit of local musicians and audiences alike. The orchestra will be a very welcome addition to Shetland’s musical community.
