21 January – 4 March 2012

Public opening: 20 January, 5.30-7.30pm, Gallery talk: 21 January, 2.30pm

Shetland Arts is delighted to announce that the work of eminent local photographer Dennis Coutts will be showcased at Bonhoga Gallery for the first exhibition of 2012 on Friday 20th January. Dennis has been photographing Shetland’s society for over 60 years and his work is a fascinating catalogue of life throughout the islands. For this exhibition work has been selected from the 1960s and represents Shetland in the pre-oil era.

The exhibition will appeal to anyone with an interest in the stories and characters from this period in Shetland’s history. While life was very different then, these stunning black and white photographs reflect a character of life in Shetland which is timeless and remains in many ways unchanged today.

Dennis worked as a commercial photographer from his studio on The Street, combining press photography with family portraiture, social reportage and his own interests in natural history and the landscape. Dennis’ incredible talent for photography – particularly portraiture – is highlighted by the quality of composition, at a time when the art of photography was quite different to that of the digital age today.

All the photographs in the exhibition have been hand-printed by Dennis’ son, John, using traditional darkroom processes and are for sale, mounted and signed by Dennis. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a traditional print from this unique archive.

Everyone is welcome to the opening of the exhibition on 20th January from 5.30-7.30pm. Dennis will be giving a short talk about his work in the gallery on Saturday 21st January at 2.30pm, which will provide an opportunity to hear some of the fascinating tales of Dennis’ life, career and the subjects of his work. The talk is free, no booking required.

As part of ‘Blowup’ the forthcoming exhibition at the Bonhoga Gallery Shetland Arts is offering the opportunity for adults to take part in dance workshops.

‘Blowup’ is an interactive performance environment designed for choreographed performances and public interaction. The work consists of two large video projections in which video imagery of the performers or viewers is manipulated in real-time. These images are cut up, redistributed and distorted by the software so that parts of the body are projected larger or smaller than others depending on how fast they are moving.

It offers a fascinating way of exploring the body and its movement within a defined space. The workshop sessions will be led by choreographer and dancer Sue Hawksley within the interactive environment.

There are three workshops available on Saturday 1st , Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd October from 5.00 pm – 7.30 pm. They might be of particular interest to individuals/pairs or those who might wish to develop the ideas with existing groups (dance teachers etc) with a view to the group getting the most from the exhibition. Alternatively, it might just be good fun.

Places on the workshops are free but are limited to just 6 places per session, so advance booking is essential. Places can be booked on the Shetland Box Office on 01595 745555 or www.shetlandboxoffice.org

The Travelling Gallery will be arriving in Shetland this month with its latest exhibition, Drawn In. The exhibition is a fascinating exploration of drawing as a tool for unlocking the imagination, and the visit to the islands is the final part of its fifteen week tour of Scotland. The Travelling Gallery is a custom-built, mobile, contemporary art space supported by Creative Scotland to bring world class visual art to schools and communities throughout Scotland.

The gallery will be visiting schools across Shetland, and will be open to public at the Toll Clock Shopping Centre Car Park, Lerwick on Saturday 11th June from 1pm – 5pm.

Visitors will be able to see new artworks specially commissioned for the Travelling Gallery’s unique space with the help of new funds from The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Creative Scotland, including an animation by Katy Dove inspired by the Scottish landscape, a bold wall drawing by Rob Churm and sculptural installations by artist Franziska Furter.

There are also works from Japanese performance artist Sachiko Abe, Belgium based brother and sister Sara and Wout Bomans, Richard Forster, Alex Frost and Swiss artist Nicolas Party. [See below for more detail on the artists and their work.]
In addition, visitors to the gallery will have the special opportunity of being able to look at sketchbooks from many of the exhibiting artists as well as artists involved in the Travelling Gallery education programme.
The Artists

SACHIKO ABE
Recently Sachiko Abe performed each day of the Liverpool Biennale cutting millimetre lines of paper from an A4 sheet. This beautifully eloquent event is represented here by a pencil drawing and a film by Sachiko and Ben Rivers. www.afoundation.org.uk/details.php?id=57 <http://www.afoundation.org.uk/details.php?id=57>

SARA and WOUT BOMANS
Sara Bomans has created characteristic hair-drawings based on the sketches of hybrid creatures and monsters drawn by her 9 year old brother Wout. www.sarabomans.be <http://www.sarabomans.be/>

ROB CHURM
Rob Churm makes drawings using basic materials such as pens, biros, Tipp-ex, ink and brushes.
He explores new ideas but often finds himself returning to common themes – things that have balance, things that flow and their interruptions, rivers and bones, people and animals, cigarettes and light bulbs, explosions, patterns and empty spaces. www.sorchadallas.com/artists/28 <http://www.sorchadallas.com/artists/28>

KATY DOVE
Destinations the gallery travels to have been chosen as starting points for this new work. Photographic and filmed footage were captured in several locations around Scotland including Helmsdale and The Black Isle. Birdsong from these places has been mixed with other sounds to form the soundtrack for the film. Katy Dove is just beginning a residency in New York supported by Creative Scotland.
www.halesgallery.com/artists/_KATY%20DOVE/

RICHARD FORSTER
Painstakingly detailed, almost photo-real pencil drawings made from snapshots, or pages torn from magazines that have particular resonance for the artist, explore our understanding of what we are looking at, so questioning both the thing itself and the image of the thing. www.inglebygallery.com/artists_detail.php?id=59 <http://www.inglebygallery.com/artists_detail.php?id=59>

ALEX FROST
The source photographs – which for much of the series are self-portraits of the artist with his eyes closed – are processed using software designed to transform images into stitch-patterns for computer-controlled looms. Frost punches pinholes through the resulting stitch marks by hand, then lays the template on the ground and forces enamel paint through the holes from the back to make an image on the front. www.alexfrost.comm <http://www.alexfrost.comm/>

FRANZISKA FURTER
A 5mm wide line of very thin aluminium leaf whirls around on the wall and forms loops, a loose knot without a beginning or an end. As the viewer moves along the drawing the reflections from the line change from dark to shiny to invisible. The second work made out of thousands of knots with nylon threads, is like a three-dimensional drawing hanging from the wall.

NICOLAS PARTY
Nicolas Party’s still life drawings always include the same series of objects, teapots, pots, sausages and fruits. The artist sees these objects as different characters and every drawing involves a new situation, a new intrigue between the characters, while the table functions as a theatre stage.
Nicolas recently exhibited at the Collective Gallery as part of the New Work Scotland Programme. www.collectivegallery.com <http://www.collectivegallery.com/>
