Shetland Arts and Shetland Film Club are working together to show some extraordinary films in support of LGBT History Month throughout February. LGBT History Month is an opportunity to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lives by exploring history from a LGBT context. It’s also an opportunity to learn about and discuss the continued fight for LGBT liberation.

Shetland Film Club will kick the celebrations off with another chance to see the marvelous Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, an exuberant documentary about the world's only New Zealand country and western singing, lesbian, twins Jules and Lynda Topp. Jules and Lynda have been delighting audiences for over twenty years with their music and their array of quirky comedy characters. The film looks at their lives, starting out on the family sheep farm, then busking and playing to local audiences before becoming a touring phenomenon loved by thousands. This will be screened at Shetland Museum and Archives on Friday 7th February at 7.30pm, pay on the door.

Shetland Arts will follow up with two recently made films at Mareel: the critically lauded Blue Is The Warmest Colour on Wednesday 19th February, and the acclaimed documentary Les Invisibles on Wednesday 5th March.

Blue is the Warmest Colour is a French language film with English subtitles, following young Adèle who, with her girlfriend Emma, explores social acceptance, sexuality, and the emotional spectrum of their maturing relationship.

Les Invisibles is also French language film with English subtitles, in which eleven LGBT men and women born between the wars tell their personal stories. Winner of the Cesar Award for Best Documentary, and nominated for the BFI London Film Festival Grierson Award, it's an affectionate but frank account that is in turn touching and amusing, offering an invaluable reminder of an overlooked area of our community at a time when we consider our own attitudes towards a growing elderly population.

Lisa Ward, Shetland Arts’ Marketing Officer, said: “Shetland Arts would like to thank Shetland Film Club and the Shetland LGBT Group for working with us to produce this excellent programme of films celebrating LGBT History Month. We hope to see a good turnout for all three films.”

Tickets for the films showing at Mareel are available to book via Shetland Box Office in Mareel & Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555, or online at mareel.org & shetlandboxoffice.org.
