The second film in Shetland Arts’ Film Wednesdays season, We Need to Talk About Kevin (cert 15) will be screened on Wednesday 25th April at The Garrison Theatre.

Directed by British film maker Lynne Ramsay (of Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar fame), this adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s best-selling novel is a suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller which explores the deeply troubled relationship between a mother and her son.  The film moves into uncomfortable territory as the mother, Eva, struggles to bond with a child that seems to reject her from the start and who contrives to bring about the family’s ruin, ultimately committing a dreadful crime within the local community.

Tilda Swinton’s tour-de-force performance as Eva is matched by Ezra Miller’s creepily convincing turn as the unlovable Kevin, prompting one reviewer to remark that the next time a film is made about Satan, Miller’s name should be top of the list.

We Need to Talk About Kevin tears into the nature versus nurture debate, as well as the questions around who is responsible when a child goes off the rails in such a spectacular and awful way. Should we ‘blame the parents’ or is there such a thing as an essentially malevolent child?

Film Wednesdays is a series of screenings designed to spotlight the best of independent and world cinema, classic films and documentaries.

The film starts at 7.30pm and lasts 1 hour and 50 mins.

Tickets are available from Shetland Box Office, tel. 01595 745555.
