As special festive treat for our customers, Shetland Arts is absolutely delighted to announce that we will be putting films showing in Mareel from 21 to 27 December on advance sale tomorrow (Friday 14 December) at 10am. And on Tuesday next week (18 December) we will also put films showing from 28 Dec to 3 Jan, and new films Life of Pi (showing from 4 Jan) and Les Miserables (showing from 11 Jan), on sale too. This will give our customers a bit of extra time to plan out their festive film-viewing before the holidays begin.

Life of Pi

Mareel Cinema is programmed weekly from Friday to Thursday. This allows us to be flexible and continue films which are proving popular with our audiences once we have assessed how they have been received over the weekend. On Monday mornings we negotiate with film distributors about which films to continue showing from the previous week, according to audience demand and box office figures. This means that our films for any given Friday to Thursday week usually go on sale on Tuesdays, though some films do go on sale before this.

Shetland Arts’ Marketing Officer Lisa Ward said: “When we first book films from distributors all we are usually able to confirm at that time is the date that the film will first show in Mareel, but not the exact times it will appear in the cinema. This is how the cinema industry across the UK operates as standard. For big blockbusters we are usually able to confirm the exact times around two weeks before they are due to show in Mareel, but for most films we are only able to confirm the times closer to the date. However, we were very aware that it would be beneficial for both our customers and for us if we could manage to confirm the film times for the festive period a little further in advance than usual. With that in mind, our staff and our programmers, City Screen - owners of the Picturehouse chain of cinemas, have worked very hard this week to negotiate with distributors to confirm the times further in advance than usual so that our customers can plan ahead, and maybe we can get a bit of a time off over the festive too!”

Film tickets are available via Shetland Box Office in Mareel and Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555, and online at www.mareel.org and www.shetlandboxoffice.org.
