Ethnographic drawing

Wednesday 29 July 1-4pm

Mareel Green Room

An introduction to the method that has been the basis for the drawings in Unearthed. A series of short and simple activities demonstrate how to develop a drawing about the meaning of an object. Please bring an object to the workshop that either has significance to you or that you find intriguing. This workshop will include working with other participants as well as working independently.

Discovering a drawing in photographs

Tuesday 18th August 10am - 1pm

Mareel Green Room

Photographs can hold much more information than might appear at first glance. Historical photos have been a significant point of reference for the development of some of the drawings in Unearthed. Using tracing, overhead projectors and photocopying, you will visually dissect and reinterpret photographs and then use what you have discovered as the basis for a drawing. Photographs are available to use, alternatively you are welcome to bring your own photographs to work with.

Lino Printing

Sunday 23 August 1-4pm

Mareel Green Room

Unearthed includes a suite of six lino prints that each depict the moment when a person showed their oil era skran to the artist. In comparison to putting pencil to paper, lino prints offer a completely different way to develop a drawing. A lino image is primarily created by juxtaposing areas of ink with areas where plain paper is exposed. Moreover, because the drawing is made by cutting into the lino and then printing it onto paper, more than one drawing can be made. This workshop involves the use of sharp hand tools and inks: participants are advised to wear covered shoes, and an old shirt to prevent their clothing from staining.

Places on the workshops are limited - book your space now through Shetland Box Office

£6 per workshop or £15 for all three, including a 10% discount for Bonhoga cafe & shop!
