The feature-length first episode of the new series of Doctor Who will show on the big screen at Mareel this Sunday evening. Set in Victorian London, episode one, Deep Breath, reunites the newly regenerated Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and returning companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) with series regulars and fan favourites, Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax. The episode is directed by Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, A Field in England) and written by Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Jekyll)

Doctor Who Series 8 Iconic

Shetland Arts’ Marketing Officer, Lisa Ward, said: “At the start of the month we were offered a screening of Deep Breath to show at Mareel. As part of the deal we were told we could show it in the cinema either after 9.30pm on Saturday or on Sunday. We asked our followers on social media which they would prefer, and most chose Sunday (due primarily to event clashes on Saturday night), so we went ahead and booked the show! We’re very much looking forward to seeing another Doctor Who adventure on the big screen at Mareel and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who gave us feedback on this booking. We hope to see you all there on Sunday!”

Peter Capaldi says he’s interested in seeing how fans are going to react to the new episode. He said: “The thing I do know, because I’m a fan of Doctor Who, is that if there are a lot of people who don’t like me, there will also be some people who really like me, and that’s quite a nice feeling. That’s the nature of the show. People will take sides.”

Jenna Coleman said the series opener represents a change in the tone of the show. She said: “It feels different. The pace is different, and the tone. It’s definitely darker, but again I think it’s because the Doctor is much more removed and not as accessible to humans. The show feels complex, and the Doctor is complicated. He’s this heroic figure but he can’t quite accept he’s a hero. It’s also the Doctor getting to know himself again as well as the audience, and Clara, getting to know him.”
