Shetland Arts is proud to present Disability Pursuits, an interactive visual arts exhibition about different ways of seeing the world, by artist Lydia Popowich at Shetland Museum and Archives. This innovative show will be displayed in the Boat Corridor at the Museum and members of the public are invited to attend the public opening of the exhibition on Tuesday 12 October 2010 from 5-7pm. Teas and coffees will be available and it will also be a chance to meet the artist. The exhibition will continue until 25 October.

Disability Pursuits is touring to Shetland after being shown in Thurso during the summer. ‘Through my exhibition tour, I hope to introduce the concept of disability arts to a wide audience in the Highlands and Islands. Each exhibition will provide opportunities for disabled artists and members of the public to meet and leave contact details which I will place on a data base with the long term intention of establishing a networking website in Northern Scotland and the basis for a Highlands and Islands Disability Arts Forum (HiDAF). The presentation of the work in the form of a game helps to break down barriers between audience, artist and the perceived inaccessible nature of some contemporary art. I believe Art can be fun and personally relevant’, says artist Lydia Popowich.

There is also an opportunity to take part in a workshop led by Lydia on Thursday 14 October 2-5pm in the Learning Room at Shetland Museum and Archives. All ages and abilities welcome. ‘Shetland Arts is delighted to be able to present this workshop in partnership with Disability Shetland. Through the medium of portraiture, Lydia will explore concepts of body image and identity. Whilst it is a serious subject, I know that Lydia will create a workshop that will be fun and relevant for everyone’, says Clair Aldington, Visual Arts Development Officer, Shetland Arts.
