From 2pm to 4pm today BBC Radio 5 Live’s Kermode and Mayo, starring Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo, will be broadcast live from Mareel in Shetland.

Mark will be in the upstairs Café Bar interviewing Screenplay guests such as Bill Forsyth, and also Shetland Arts’ own Head of Development, Kathy Hubbard, about the excellent selection of screenings at Shetland’s sixth annual film festival taking place in the new venue until Sunday 9 September.

Screenplay 2012 runs from 31 August to 9 September and is curated by celebrated film critics Mark Kermode Linda Ruth Williams. It features a feast of film screenings, lectures and panel discussions involving national and international film industry professionals and film academics.

This will be the first ever live national broadcast from Mareel, the UK’s most northerly music, cinema and creative industries centre. BBC Radio Shetland’s Good Evening Shetland was broadcast locally from the venue in August. Parts of Good Evening Shetland will be broadcast from Mareel again tonight, and the show will include interviews with Mark Kermode, Bill Forsyth, and local filmmakers Marjolein and Dirk Robertson.

Situated in a prominent quayside area in Lerwick next to the Shetland Museum and Archives, Mareel has a live performance auditorium, two cinema screens, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, education and training spaces, a digital media production suite, broadcast facilities and a cafe bar with free high speed wi-fi internet access. Mareel will provide a year round programme of film, live music, education and other performance events.

Director of Shetland Arts, Gwilym Gibbons, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Kermode and Mayo will be broadcast from Mareel on BBC Radio 5 Live this afternoon. The team are busy setting up the broadcast equipment in the upstairs Café Bar right now, and it looks set to be an excellent show with a packed programme of Screenplay events to discuss. We are also pleased to welcome back BBC Radio Shetland this evening for a great show which will include interviews with both local and national Screenplay guests.

Kermode and Mayo starts at 2pm today on BBC Radio 5 Live. Good Evening Shetland starts at 5.30pm on BBC Radio Shetland.
