You might have survived the ‘Attack of the 50 foot Woman’; you might have been terrified with ‘The Incredible Shrinking Man’; and you might have escaped from ‘The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms’.......but are you ready to face the ultimate test?  Are you prepared for ...GARGANTUA?

As part of NT Connections (the largest youth theatre festival on the planet), Shetland Youth Theatre is preparing to unleash a new horror on an unsuspecting public.

Stock up with supplies, lock the doors and tremble with fear as Hugh Mungus a 220 foot tall baby wreaks havoc on the world around him in revenge for the cruelty inflicted by the sinister Janus Technologies.

Alternatively, buy a ticket and see this supersized bambino in a battle to the death with the insane General Malahyde

  • Cheer as Hugh breaks his shackles and escapes from a cloning hell
  • Sigh as he cradles his loving parents
  • Hold you head in despair as you see the incompetence of the Prime Minister (Dave)
  • Hiss at the rampant exploitation of Mayonnaise Magnate Regina Buxley
  • Tremble as the minutes tick by towards a nuclear ending
‘Gargantua’, written by Carl Grosse is a homage to 1950’s B Movies.  What it lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in noise.  What it lacks in expenditure it makes up for in cardboard.  What it lacks in psychology it makes up for in enthusiasm

Featuring music created by Shetland College NC & HNC Music students based at Mareel, live film action (provided by Maddrim Media) and pre-recorded video (courtesy of the Vocational Pathways Video Producstion students, based at Mareel), the 20 strong company of young actors will be presenting this epic (yet cheap) extravaganza in the main auditorium at Mareel on 11th & 12th March.

Now in its 20th year, Connections has commissioned over 150 new pieces of theatre for 13- 19 year olds, and provides young people with the opportunity to experience the process of putting on a professional show, from staging and acting, to developing costumes and marketing the event. Following the performances in Shetland, the cast of Gargantua will be fundraising to take the show on tour to Inverness to perform to sell out audiences there as part of the Connections festival.

Director John Haswell said ‘Gargantua’ is an experience not to be missed and one that will never ever be forgotten’ – tickets for the Mareel shows are on sale now - make sure you don't miss out!
