Shetland Arts is committed to Film Development in two strands: film making and film exhibition. The project began in earnest in 2007 when Shetland Arts facilitated the setting up of two community groups. One in partnership with Shetland Youth Services was for young people with an interest in film making and digital media, the other primarily for adults with the same interests. This was underpinned by the purchase of filming equipment and film editing hardware and software. The purchase was funded by Leader+ and with support from Shetland Islands Council Youth Services.
Since the opening of Mareel, Shetland Arts Cinema & Music Venue in August 2012, Shetland Arts provides 7 day a week cinema programme. Mareel Cinema provides two screens and offers a wide ranging film programme, from new releases, to art-house to one-off alterative content including operas and theatre shows.
We also work in partnership with Shetland Amenity Trust, and Shetland Film Club, to show special screenings in the Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick. Shetland Art also host an annual film festival, Screenplay, which features the exhibition of film from around the world, alongside film created in Shetland.
Film Development and Training
A variety of local community groups, independent film makers and agencies are supported by Shetland Arts who allow them access to the film making equipment and facilities. Also facilitated and supported are skills workshops, and master classes, led by local and national film makers throughout the year and as part of ScreenPlay.
Film and TV production, investment and support
Shetland Film is here to facilitate and support incoming film and TV production companies to Shetland – but that’s not all, we are interested in film development too and how film and TV location work in Shetland can contribute to our ambitious plans for creative industry growth.
